In recent years, with advances in artificial intelligence (AI), image recognition, voice search, Internet of Things (IoT), big data, sensing and other related technologies, new business models have emerged and matured. As China officially issues 5G commercial licenses, the era of 5G commercialization is fast approaching. Business models integrating Internet of Things and New Retail will leverage communication technology revolution and retail industry evolution to unleash enormous commercial potentials and values, attracting the attention of industry players. As the world’s leading wireless communication technology and semiconductor supplier, Qualcomm has established strategic partnership with China Unicom on 5G IoT development. As Qualcomm’s main module supplier in China, SIMCom also attended the unveiling ceremony of Qualcomm - China Unicom IoT Joint Innovation Center.

Luo Xiaoyan, SIMCom Deputy General Manager, attended the unveiling ceremony. Luo Xiaoyan obtained his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Beihang University. Since starting his research career in the communication industry in 2001, he has become a well-recognized R&D talent in the industry with extensive experience in the wireless communication sector. During the ceremony, Mr. Luo shared SIMCom’s innovations in the new retail sector and its progress in the 5G sector.
According to Mr. Luo, SIMCom has launched SIM8950LH smart module for the smart retail sector. It’s a multi-mode LTE platform based on Qualcomm SDM450 and a complete multi-band LTE-FDD/TDD/TD-SCDMA/DC-HSPA+/HSPA/UMTS/EVDO/EGDE/GPRS/GSM/GNSS smart module with uplink rate up to 50 Mbps and downlink rate up to 150 Mbps. With powerful processor design, customers can benefit from these small, economical and efficient products. It’s ideal for smart retail, smart payment, graphic display, etc. Compared with traditional payment methods, with the addition of biometrics and facial recognition, smart payment has enabled convenient self-service marketing of “no cash, no mobile, online order and offline pickup”, giving consumers a hands-free experience. With cashless payment, there is no need for consumers to withdraw money and for cashiers to give change. This will improve the efficiency of daily operations, avoid cash being stolen, eliminate the process of cash counting, and effectively help companies “reduce cost, increase efficiency and improve experience”.
In its essence, new retail is actually an efficiency revolution, the core of which is to help the retail industry “reduce cost, increase efficiency and improve experience by leveraging the power of technology. It’s the empowerment and upgrade of existing retail structure and ecosystem through the application of AI, IoT and other advanced technology. SIMCom will continue to march forward in this direction.
